About The Artwork
This painting's official title is the Irish title An Canáil, but I couldn't enter that into title space. I was experimenting with the idea of creating the image of a grimey waterfront and making it from charcoal seemed like a great idea as it is a grimey material. I was inspired to create this work in part from a photo I saw on Instagram, but also from seeing a picture of St Pauls's Cathedral done during the Blitz by David Bomberg, who had depicted the burning city, and the dome of the cathedral with charcoal. I hope as you look at this piece that you will feel the coldness of the scene.
