The Mystery Language, example Drawing

THE MYSTERY LANGUAGE by Ve Sidra Magni explores the visual definition of language, and how closely we identify subtle shapes and markings with global meaning. Is the calligraphy a real, translatable language, or is it merely a collection of markings arranged in a pattern? When interacting with the calligraphy, the viewer immediately wants to know the correct answer and may feel anything from fascination to anger in response to being denied. But they are compelled to realize that to an outside observer, our languages, which are merely a collection of markings arranged in patterns, would seem just as peculiar. A language is only real because we recognize it—because we understand language as a referential tool to shorten the visual distance between an imagined idea and an actual one.
