“The Obvious Limitation” I really let go of any attachments to the way I wanted the piece to look and just went fearlessly onto the paper and totally covered it with graphite pencil markings and charcoal to create this new challenging surface to work on, instead of taking paint straight to paper like I did in my two previous pieces. I took a very experimental approach on this piece as I was in the midst of this fascination with the way that Jean Michel Basquiat would work with unquestionable self confidence and fluidity that looked as though he had this capability to channel his subconscious mind on a whim and the things that came out seemed to naturally arrange themselves and everything as he painted it was as it was meant to be. I did my own take on that and experimented with that method in several different ways. In this painting I reach a middle ground where the uncontrolled elements are resolved by elements of control but are still very visible. This contrast creates a balance between the two elements. This piece is very simple I usually am very minimal in my work and possibly that shows a lot this time as the piece almost seems unfinished. These big feet stand behind some intersecting lines that obscure and act as an obstacle for the feet but the low lying lines would be very easily overcome with a simple step over them. So it brings up the question of why are the feet just standing behind the lines? And what are the lines representative of ? In Trinidad and Tobago and probably the rest of the Caribbean there is this omnipresence of electrical and phone wires that run along almost every street and I always felt like they obscured so much beauty and always got in the way of a good picture. I thought about this a lot “power lines obscure” and began working on a series of paintings that all shared this feature of the power lines acting as an obstacle or obscuring something. These power lines are like lines of power that we think we are unable to cross. This continues the story of emergence, overcoming obstacles despite unfavorable circumstances. In this piece is where the ideas of obstacles and the act of overcoming them collide and ask a further question of what really is the obstacle ?
