About The Artwork

As a painter's painter, I often paint or draw portraits of artists, deceased artists or those still very much alive, renowned and obscure ones. This time the Dutch painter Toon Verhoef (born 1946), who has been a lecturer at 'de Ateliers' in Amsterdam and 'Minerva' in Groningen. He is both a painter and a ceramist, a combination I admire (as I am only proficient in one medium). The photo that carried the subject of this pastel drawing is a still from a youtube video about his work. In his studio he looks out on a wide river, seeing boats pass him by, a movement that inspires him to make the abstract paintings that he makes. On this drawing the viewer witnesses the focus that an artist like Toon Verhoef brings to the table whenever he is engaged in creating art. The medium, pastel, enables me to work with bright hues, juxtaposing complementary and primary colors to a visual blend contributing to the artist's joy of painting.

I lived in Tamilnadu for almost 15 years, my (late) wife Jansi is Tamilian, our twins for 50%. Tamil is the language of nearly 70 million people in and outside India. Tamil is the language of poets, its verses are well-known across many borders and there isn't an Indian state that produces as many new songs every year as Tamilnadu does. In short, when thinking about a name for my art enterprise, கலை ('art') immediately came to my mind. I draw and paint since a small age, but only since 2002 I have been taking it more seriously. When Jansi died in 2014 I was down and out for a year, but in 2015 while putting myself and our twins together again, my art work started to take me on a strong flight to where I am now, where I draw and paint so much that I dare call myself an artist.
