About The Artwork

A colorful and detailed drawing of an Imp from a serie of eight. Imps are mythological beings usually described in portuguese popular culture, especially in Minho folklore. These devilish little creatures and often charming with their energy and play, appear materialized in sculpture in the catholic churches, usually placed meticulously in hidden places as under the eaves of the church. Within the clay figurine of Barcelos there are also small devils painted by the artisans in vibrant and contrasting colors. The creation of these imps comes from a feeling of adoration for portuguese popular culture, which includes the traditions, superstitions and popular customs of Minho. The figures drawn by Joana Vinagre are thus inspired by the representative symbols of portuguese folklore, such as those found in the costumes that women wear in traditional Alto Minho dances such as “Malhão” or “Vira”. These garments stand out for their bold colors, the texture of their hand-embroidered motifs and the adornment objects specific to these festive and religious customs, such as the gold filigree heart. Another symbol of popular culture is the sweetheart handkerchief (“lenço dos namorados”). These are handkerchiefs embroidered by hand on a linen cloth using colorful symbols (flowers, birds, letters, keys, hearts, brambles, etc.) that reinforce the amorous message written in verse on it. One of the other aspects that led Joana Vinagre to create these goblins was the experiences she shared with her family and friends in dances or conversations around a table, while celebrating popular saints such as the feast of S. João Batista, a religious festival that mixes sacred and profane traditions. Surrounded by cheerful people, full of energy, some more elvish than others, but at the same time cordial and humble, Joana created memories that nourish dreams. These illustrations are extremely detailed and accentuate the fascination that Joana Vinagre has for the creation and repetition of small forms of drawing and color combination. This work is signed, dated on the back and ready to hang.

Joana Vinagre was born in 1983, in Porto. She is a visual artist who is almost entirely a self-taught creative and currently she lives and works in Braga. Joana didn´t follow the traditional channel of academic art training, so her knowledge of art is from the study of books, nature, personal photographs and of other artists’ works. She likes to work with different subject matter and to experience various media so that she can work her skills to the fullest. For being involved in different environments of various energies and dynamism and surroundings made up of different organic and geometric shapes, lines, color palettes, it is not possible to express herself in just one way and that´s way her artistic work is not defined by just one style of art. For her, work is an experimentation, which she hopes it goes in the direction of a continuous evolution in the study of shape, line, colour, composition and balance. While observing her works you will find artistic works of abstract and modern style, as well as illustrations and paintings in folk art style based in the popular portuguese culture. For Joana Vinagre colour is an instrument that aims to awaken our emotions.
