"The Story of Us' is a study of compare and contrast between the challenges of the past and opportunities of the present. This piece shows a man in a museum viewing the famous work 'Reading the Emancipation Proclamation.' In it, a group of freed slaves gather around a man who is reading aloud the historic document that declared their freedom. The painting captures the emotions of joy, relief, gratitude, and hope that filled the hearts of millions of African Americans who had suffered under slavery for so long. 'Reading the Emancipation Proclamation' is a masterpiece of American art that celebrates a momentous occasion in the nation's history. In my work, 'Viewing the Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation,' I wanted to capture a man seasoned in years, old enough to know the and appreciate the struggle, yet firmly established in a time and place where he is free to roam about as he chooses. I hope the viewer can appreciate the distance between the two key elements in the piece. He stands right before the painting and yet is separated from event of the piece by over a hundred and fifty years. I pose a question to the viewer, which is the subject in this work, the viewer or the painting? Is the man viewing the painting, or has the painting attracted the man? From a conceptual standpoint, this was an intriguing drawing to make. The craftsmanship, angle, perspective, lighting, and texture proved far more challenging than 'God bless the Child', the first piece in this series.

My name is Jeremy Phelps and I have been an artist practically since birth. Though all kids are natural artists, most of us put down the artistic tools and 'grow' out of it at a certain age. I never did. I have always appreciated the animation in cartoons and games, the way Disney makes magic happen on the big screen, and mostly the way fine artists make us feel with their two- and three-dimensional extensions of themselves. I've always known that this is my gift and my place in the world, to be an artist. I love to experiment with different mediums and subjects. I can create beautiful landscapes with colored pencils, vibrant portraits with pastels, and abstract compositions with acrylics. I enjoy the challenge of switching between different techniques and styles, and I feel like each medium has its own charm and personality. Sometimes I wonder if I should focus on one medium and master it, or if I should keep exploring and learning new things. Maybe I am afraid of missing out on something, or maybe I am just too curious and adventurous. The same dilemma applies to my subject interest. I like to draw animals, women, celebrities, historical narratives, plants, and anything that catches my eye. I don't want to limit myself to one theme or genre, but I also don't want to confuse my audience or lose my identity as an artist. How do you balance variety and consistency in art? That's a question that only time will tell for me.
