About The Artwork

From the Artist’s Yankees Training collection of drawings and paintings, 1987-89. Here, Dave Rhigetti was sitting on the field during a break, which gave the artist an opportunity to do a quick drawing of him. The artwork in this collection is done in oil & graphite on various papers, using the artist’s signature reportage style. All drawings & paintings in this collection were done on location at the Yankees Spring Training camp, Ft Lauderdale, 1987-89. The artist was originally invited to Spring Training by Dave Winfield, an art collector himself ,who admired her sumo artwork. There she met George Steinbrenner who also liked her artwork and asked her to keep drawing, planning to use the artwork in his magazine. Matsuoka documented Yankees Spring Training the following 2 years as well in her signature reportage drawings, returning each time from Tokyo where she was living at that time. Mr. Steinbrenner would declare her "my artist" to whomever he was with every time he walked past her on the field. He invited her to Yankee Stadium a number of times to meet with his magazine editor but they never used the drawings. They remain in Matsuoka’s personal collection. The legendary Milton Glaser said Lynn Matsuoka is “probably the greatest living reportage artist.” The artist takes commissions for your favorite player.

ARTIST LYNN MATSUOKA DOCUMENTS CULTURE CNN reported: “Few artists so completely dominate their field that their name becomes synonymous with the subject matter, but Lynn Matsuoka has succeeded in capturing the essence of Sumo and has won a loyal following along the way.“Like Degas with his dancers, Lynn Matsuoka set out to depict the particular beauty of performers who devote their lives to an all-encompassing craft, capturing the nuances of the world they create in the process.
