The Jester King Drawing

The very talented model who posed for The Jester King is a former Alvin Ailey dancer. His athleticism and dynamic poses are unparalleled. I had the great fortune of having access to museum-quality African ceremonial masks, reminiscent of Picasso's African period. Although my style of art is not Cubism, I planned a Cubist-themed session with the model, and could hardly wait. The model exceeded my expectations as he posed wearing masks worthy of an African king. We were further inspired by a playlist I had created of authentic Cubist music from 1910s. For one of the last poses, the model draped himself in a sash of red, black and gold African batik fabric, and then surprised me by donning his own jester's cap. Posing with the same conviction as for the ceremonial masks, what a surprisingly regal jester he made! The Jester King was the reward of an absolutely magical day in the studio.
