About The Artwork

Inspired by the peculiar, if somewhat unacknowledged prominence of water in Chinese painting practiced by artists such as Fu Baoshi. The Chinese have two terms 'Shuimo' (Water Ink) and 'Shanshui' (mountain water) used in their ink painting. I am more interested in converting this into a drawing process. This work is about old sheds and allotments. I like the worn, haphazard and used aspect of husbandry. I hope the viewer will see the conceptual blurring between the wateriness of the technique and the subject matter. I would like them to see the fluid process of making and enjoy the way the water controls the drawing process. I expect the viewer not to comprehend that this is a drawing process. I chose the medium to reflect the haphazard subject matter and to encourage spontaneity letting the image grow through the residue of water and pigment stain.
