Inspired by penmanship instruction and drills dating back to the late 19th century, from a text taught in schools nationwide called the Palmer Method. As Palmer suggests, I have given a careful study of each letter, each part by itself and the letter as a whole (combining classic penmanship drills and also inventing my own). The pattern consists of Xs and Os, lower and uppercase. Materials include a combination of carbon transfer, litho crayon, and hand-typed ink on vintage tablet paper (paper size 7.75” x 10”). The top red typewriter ink is a passage taken from the Palmer Method text; it reads: There’s is an old saying, "Practice makes perfect.” That is only partly true in relation to writing. Practice of the right kind leads toward perfection, but the wrong kind of practice leads just as surely in the opposite direction. It is not so much the exercise that is practiced as the manner in which it is practiced. The instructions tell you just how to succeed. The work is exquisitely framed, frame dimensions: 14.5 x 17 with a flat black face, blonde wood sides and interior, the frame sits 1 3/8” off the wall. The artwork is float-mounted, raising it off the warm grey textured matte. The matte’s finish is reminiscent of graphite. Highest quality non-glare museum glass.

Graphic structures, obscured messages, unconventional language, and memories often come into play in the creation of my artwork. Billboards and materials of correspondence frequently act as containers for those ideas. To see more artwork, please also visit my personal website, tudyk.com.
