A Dress of Walls-Cape Town Installation

A visit to Cape Town was the stimulus for this piece and several works (Installation) that is in progress. The walls surrounding the homes was the first thing that grabbed my attention in one of the most beautiful cities in the world in my opinion. A sense of fear and security and although I have lived in these surrounding growing up in E.Africa several decades ago, nevertheless, this was what inspired me to create this work with walls. A Dress is a covering hence the image is that of Protection. My work is textile based, the materials used are fabrics, thread, text with the use of the sewing machine and text that refer to Safety, Security etc. Some of the images are printed and then manipulated and collaged. For many years textiles, embroidery was not considered Art. I have practiced this art form for over 50 years challenging new ideas and technologies with this art form. History and political issues are at the core of my work. As an Artist it is important to bring this awareness to the world at large via one's work.
