La Capitana Installation

I am interested in Remedios del Valle because she gathers in her person as much strength as precariousness. A woman who had been a slave, subjected to abuse, marginalized by her origin, decides to fight and support the independence cause. Freedom. In this way, my work reconstructs her identity, underlining her African origin, her strength, and vulnerability. These characteristics I project in her hair that make up her portrait: The tight braid, her hair tied high, to have a clear forehead already for forced labor or to have a clear view on the battlefield. Where she not only attended to the mutilated but also where she took up arms. I used porcelain and charcoal, materials that speak of her humility and self-denial. With them, I made numerous braids, curlers, and magnolias that are combined with other small pieces of broken glass. Porcelain, coal, and glass form alchemy that generates change.
