About The Artwork

She was studying to be an actress, and so as she explained it to me, she wanted to pose nude to learn how to be more vulnerable and more confident. It was an important step for her and something she took very seriously. But she couldn't keep a straight face to save her life. Everything seemed to amuse her, and the little things most of all. Being asked to sit still for a moment left her giggling uncontrollably, at which point her jiggling breasts became the most hilarious things she'd ever witnessed. She eventually did settle down a moment, and the image we wound up with shows just a hint of the unbridled silliness building beneath the surface. If she does wind up in the movies, look out for the blooper reels. ~ The image was created primarily with a somewhat antiquated program, Paint Shop Pro 9, having been released in 2004. I prefer it for a number of reasons, chief among them comfort, and romantically for the limited tool set. Work with the subject lasted just about two hours, and creation of the final image took place in two short sessions separated by eight goddamn years, totaling only three hours. The original print is the only time this image will ever be committed to canvas, with open edition prints available on archival paper. The original is signed and dated on the back.

Before I started to take my artwork seriously I was a writer, so it was probably inevitable that my art would be about telling stories. The subjects of my portraits are often women I know, and otherwise total strangers I talk to until I think I understand the image I want to capture. It's sometimes an overly complicated, even pretentious process, but it's always worth having done.
