About The Artwork

She was a fellow artist, and -- perhaps more importantly -- a fellow insomniac, so it made sense for us to stay up through the wee hours while I worked on a series of sketches of her reclining nude on the floor. At one point she said the process was "a bit embarrassing," but added, "I trust your artwork," which may well be the highest compliment I could hope for. She painted mainly nudes herself, and most of her friends had posed for her at one time or another. Her trust gave me the confidence to keep the piece very simple. It feels just exactly like her for me, so it's a personal favorite. ~ The image was created primarily with a somewhat antiquated program, Paint Shop Pro 9, having been released in 2004. I prefer it for a number of reasons, chief among them comfort, and romantically for the limited tool set. In all the work lasted about four hours, from the time the model disrobed and I started making sketches, to the moment we both agreed the digital image was right and nothing more should be added. She was a part of that process from start to finish. The original print is the only time this image will ever be committed to canvas, with open edition prints available on archival paper. The original is signed and dated on the back.

Before I started to take my artwork seriously I was a writer, so it was probably inevitable that my art would be about telling stories. The subjects of my portraits are often women I know, and otherwise total strangers I talk to until I think I understand the image I want to capture. It's sometimes an overly complicated, even pretentious process, but it's always worth having done.
