Dodo Artwork

As a part of the extinct animals series I was inspired by the Dodo bird's history. The Dodo bird was found by Dutch soldiers around 1600 on an island in the Indian Ocean. The Dodo became extinct less than 80 years later because of deforestation, hunting, and destruction of their nests by animals brought to the island by the Dutch. As the Dodo bird did not have any historical predators it was unable to survive. I chose to draw an image of the Dodo bird in its dead or skeletal state and create a stencil with my drawing. Then I created images of the what the Dodo bird ate; crabs, mussels and palm fruit. I composed the imagery with selected paper, an abstracted acrylic background geometric shapes made of decorative papers. The style I work in is a blending of abstraction and realism which I call Emergence, the process of coming into view or becoming exposed after being concealed. I hope that the viewer will see the beauty of the Dodo bird and remember how fragile life is.
