About The Artwork

Created with bracts, leaves, and flowers of the Kousa Dogwood/Cornaceae Cornus Kousa, collected at the Arnold Arboretum on Juneteenth 2020. In preparation for an exhibit at the Arboretum, Juneteenth 2020 marked my first collection visit and the first time I had ventured beyond my own community since March. I was masked, grateful to be out in the world, but heavy with the devastating and obvious inequalities of George Floyd’s murder and exactly whom Covid-19 was killing. On that day, the Arboretum seemed a beacon, offered its treasures to all. June was, indeed, busting out all over. I began my walk at the edge of Peters Hill, following a vine-blanketed chain link fence, heart-shaped leaves speaking to the power of the uncultivated. Then the dancing branches of Dogwood trees, their creamy bracts alight, called me to take a closer look. This image is one of several created for Hidden Worlds: The New Herbarium, a series made with material from the Arboretum’s collection and exhibited there in October of 2021.

b. 1961, Norwalk, CT. Lives and works in western Massachusetts Madge Evers is an educator, gardener, and visual artist whose work celebrates regeneration and transformation. She has been paying close attention to signs of fungi since 2015, when she began making mushroom spore print art. Referencing photosynthesis and the ancient collaboration in mycorrhiza, her practice involves foraging for mushrooms and plants, and sometimes includes the cyanotype process and paint. Evers was a teacher in Rhode Island and Massachusetts public schools for 25 years and now works as a full-time artist. She continues to connect with students by teaching cyanotype workshops to people of all ages.
