Pine Marten Artwork

This piece is part of my series "Above Our Heads", which deals with animals native to Austria / Central Europe whose habitat is located above our heads. For us humans, they dart into the picture from time to time and thus into our memories. We see a squirrel in the park or perhaps a bird of prey in the air on a hike. But in everyday life, we easily forget that life also takes place above our heads, which we as humans often influence unconsciously. Unlike the stone marten, the pine marten is not a cultural follower and therefore stays away from cars and, above all, people. Pine martens mainly inhabit forests and their range extends up to the tree line. Although they are no longer hunted for their fur, humans are still their biggest enemy. Many martens are killed by the destruction of their habitat, but also by car traffic. Fortunately, the species is not acutely endangered.
