ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This work is the first in a series of petite images exploring how our imaginative faculties recollect dreamlike landscapes associated with profound personal significance. Within the realm of my dreams and recollections, facial features elude me, but rather it is the essential quality of an experience or the personality of certain people that can remember. The shells and seaweed used for this series were collected whilst visiting family in Cape Cod, USA. Beachcombing has always been a favorite pastime and a source of inspiration. Coming from New Zealand and having spent most of my life in Australia, the beach is a special place for me. I believe there is a sense of longing and nostalgia in these works - where I live now, in Munich, is far from the sea.

Claude Jones is a New Zealand-born artist, whose work explores the complex relationship between humans, animals, and the natural world. Jones’s sculptures are curious crossbreeds of animal, human and plant, evoking the fantasy realm of children’s books, but with a sombre twist. Her use of narrative, irony and symbolism, invites viewers to re-evaluate their relationship with nature, and in particular, with other animals. With an art career spanning over 15 years, Claude Jones has exhibited widely. She has been the recipient of several awards, grants and scholarships, including 10 international artist residencies. Jones’s artworks are represented in public and private collections around the world. Claude Jones is a plant-eating pacifist who passionately believes in the emancipation of all innocent beings. Her artwork reflects this philosophy.
