About The Artwork
The work of Mabel Royds has always been an inspiration to me. Her work has always filled my family home for generations. Famous for her woodcuts, Mabel was a dynamic female artist, and in the 1920's she traveled to India with her husband Lumsden, a renowned printmaker. Great aunt Mabel was unable to afford pear woodblocks for her woodcuts, she made them instead from sixpenny breadboards from Woolworths. I decided to make a tribute to her beautiful works creating something very different. Using paper and Sumi (Japanese) ink, this piece is a layered and sculptural piece with an ode to Mabel's favourite subject. The plant "Statice"also known as sea-lavender symbolising remembrance.
