About The Artwork

About The Artwork Limited Edition Print "The Golden Hour, (Industrial Elegy)" 1/5 Image size: 20 x 30" with approximately 3" border (also available on canvas) in an edition of 5 Also available on 17 x 22 paper in an edition of 35 for $390. This print is part of a series called "Industrial Elegies" bringing together the old world aesthetic of lithographs and etchings from the 18th century with modern themes of industry and water. I compose the finished work from multiple photographic captures of the architecture, textures, weather and other elements of place, blending them to invoke the dynamic process of decay and renewal. This print evolved from a photo shoot on Memorial Day weekend at the Duwamish River industrial zone. The flag hung suspended from chains over the river, unfurling its bravely languoous self like an anthem both to patriotism and to a kind of feminine anarchy: the wind! the light! the air, so warm, so inviting, and so completely unassociated with nation state. So often the American flag is a symbol that divides people into opposite sides. For me it is a powerful and talismanic object with a life of its own. It holds aspirations and dreams of freedom and justice that continue to inspire, although they may not yet be completely realized. On Memorial Day its red strips suggest sacrifice, war, strife, and shouting in the streets. Yet its stars, and the way it unfurls in infinitely new shapes each time the wind catches it, express the power of vision and the creativity that birthed this country. For me it also stands for labor: the hard, ingenious messy work of making things and building things, the kind of work that leaves ink and oil on your hands and makes noise: barges, tugboats, drills, the roar of a furnace sending plumes of steam from the steel plant at 4 AM. The Duwamish River is still that place. This limited edition print is created from a process that blends my original photography, water media painting, and digital alchemy. This print is not a reproduction of a painting, but a contemporary print in which the print itself is the only form in which the artwork exists. The finished piece is meticulously proofed and printed on German Etching, using archival pigment inks rated to last for 100 years or more. The prints come with a certificate of authenticity verifying the edition number and the edition size. These prints are traditionally numbered and signed in light pencil with the number on the left and the signature on the right, just below the image. They are intended to be matted with an approximately 1/2 inch space all around to reveal the signature, but can be cropped to the edge of the image if desired. The print shown in the room is scaled to approximately represent the larger size framed with a 5" mat border all around. *Prints are sold unframed. This original artwork is © Iskra Fine Art and may not be reproduced in any form without permission.

Throughout my work I explore impermanence as it occurs in the urban landscape and in nature. My architectural prints and mixed media pieces focus on the radical reshaping of the built landscape through gentrification and de-industrialization. As we are confronted with change and our relationship to it, I am interested in the question of how much of the past we value and hold onto, and how much we let go to make the future our “now.” My work lives on the edge between nostalgia and accommodation, mediating through the elements of surface and iconic structure to a conversation about history, identity and sense of place. I have been a calligrapher and letter form artist for much of my professional art career, creating well known brandmarks for film, books and packaging. I have created custom typographic identities for Kitty Kelly, Clive Barker, Naomi Judd, and Anne Rice among others, and movie titling for Dreamworks and Walt Disney. As a fine artist I bring my passion for mark making and the architecture of letter forms into the abstract realm. I have a calligrapher's subtle sense of surface and texture, and incorporate calligraphic mark making into many of my pieces. I use photography, digital composition, printmaking, mixed media and collage, shifting as needed to suit my subject matter. I embrace new media and the infinite ways in which the analog and the digital can be shaken, stirred and poured into a new creative form.
