About The Artwork

It's funny how limitations in what we can make and can be made into monumental positives on a creative level if you take a leap and commit. Without having had access to a conventional printmaking studio set-up to fall back on, focusing solely on using gelliplate monoprints approach has forced my hand into experimenting more. I've tried to do this by pushing the medium as far as possible by using composite prints on a large scale, mixing media [pencil, ink, brushwork, which I never used to do], and employing hand-cut stencils and masking fluid. This more fluid approach has resulted in a broader and more interesting range of marks and lines. .This piece was a collaboration with Andy Doughty, who is a prolific and superb photographer of our most special, native, and ancient trees. The subject is the magnificent Old Man of Calke. This is a truly ancient Oak tree situated in the Calke Abbey estate in South Derbyshire, and at c.1000 thousand years is one of the oldest Oak trees in the UK. I wanted to work from a black & white photograph for this one - I nearly always work from and into colour - and try and keep the atmosphere of the photo by staying relatively monochrome, and giving it a real sense of place. I did a quite liberal/loose 'negative' of the leaves by using masking fluid and layered gell prints and a bit of seam roller action over the top to give some feeling of psithurism. I finished off the piece by using gold into the hollow trunk to emphasise how precious & species-rich these giants are, with some of the surrounding vegetation rendered in metallic pearl to add some further mysticism This Print has culminated in a charity fundraiser by selling a unique set of archival prints, which has raised over £3,000 for The Woodland Trust. There is also an article about this in the Trust’s Broadleaf Magazine Spring 2024, and the print also appears in the ‘Trees Outside of Woodland‘ photo essay, recently published by Lestari, Forest Research & DEFRA.

Stewart has been a Printmaker for over 30 years, & was recently selected for the 16th Graphica Creativa Print Triennale where the Jyväskylä Art Museum acquired his work from the exhibition. He also has works in the V&A Museum print collection. He has now been selected for The Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for the 6th consecutive time, featuring in co-founder Jack Bullen's top 10 picks from the 2022 Fair. He also has had recent appearances at both the RA Summer Show & the National Original Print Show, where he won the Great Art Prize at the latter in 2018 for his screenprint, ‘Alcala’. He is continuing onwards with his Tree Portraits series from his Dartmouth studio, which started over 3 years ago in London, prior to his departure to Devon in late 2020. Initially inspired by the street trees of my neighbourhood (he printed over 100 of these at home in the space of 6 months during the first lockdown.), these moved outwards to the parks and the wilds nearby, quickly becoming a conversation about our lack of connectivity with the natural world. There are now well over 300 monoprints in this collection. This suite of prints has been further informeded by starting a small-scale rewilding project in 2019 close to his Devon home. In the past 12 months Stewart has created large-scale Joshua Tree prints from the Mojave National Preserve that were destroyed by the Cima Dome wildfire of 2020; those of deciduous trees from protected forests local to him at Avon Valley Woods, the print giveaway for which funded the ongoing traditional husbandry/management by The Woodland Trust; and trees from the banks of the Danube in Slovakia, that were photographed for me by fellow artist Eva Boda. Further collaborations with other artists & photographers are ongoing. This series will continue to help raise awareness for protecting our environment, including through donating prints for various progressive conservation & rewilding fundraisers, both in the UK & USA. by the close of 2023, Stewart will have featured in 11 exhibitions, 4 Art magazines & 3 online articles. Stewart was previously a keyholder at East London Printmakers for over a decade, where he was Project Leader of the Mile End/Copperfield Road Studio Build for the move from London Fields/Warburton Road. During my time there he worked exclusively in screenprint, whilst simultaneously working as a media professional in the City.
