About The Artwork

Each of these works were created using different shades of pressed and dried Bouginvillea flowers, The original works were scanned and printed to scale. Each work was then hand-stitched in various ways to complete the process. Created in a space of reflection and memories - taking a traditional craft form and reinterpreting it in a way that is liberating and empowering. These works embody the ideas of the feminine and feminism - through rediscovering and reworking, what used to be considered, very proper and acceptable pass-times for women. I am a painter and these materials allowed me the opportunity to experiment and play with colour and pattern in a new way that I would never have done in paint. It has been a meditative and therapeutic pursuit collecting, drying and pressing hundreds of flower petals, working them into patterns and shades of colours. For me Bougainvilleas are synonymous with suburban South African childhood memories - every neighbourhood was punctuated by these generous cascades of colours - driveways, pool areas, farm gates - they were/are ever present. An archetypal image of middle-class suburbia. My mother spent many leisurely hours pressing flowers which she used to create intricate works of art, which were given as gifts or decorated our home. This, along with needlework and sewing, were very feminine and 'pretty' middle-class hobbies. It kept good women occupied and prevented them from spending time being provocative or questioning patriarchal authority. The repetitive act of stitching into my works also became a meditation in itself - the piercing of paper and pulling of thread - remembering my own grandmother, who taught me to sew, and the sacrifices and limitations that she endured as a women in her time. Sewing was her creative outlet and her skill, the thing that allowed her some freedom to dream.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I am a painter living outside of Franschhoek, Cape Town with my sculptor husband and 2 children. My work has always been consumed with the female body and the stories and histories carried in this body. I live in an area where the trauma of our violent history can be seen in the women I encounter every day. I do not claim to be their voice - I only wish to acknowledge them and affirm that I see them.
