The display of interlocking emotions that is a smile is a so much more than the anatomical stretching of jaw, muscle, and crinkle of eye. More than merely friendly it can be loving, fake or fierce, it can be subservient, it can be dominant. A smile may mean, ‘please’, as often as it grins out a ‘screw you’. Are the elegant forms in this painting eyes, lips or eyebrows, or perhaps none of these but glimpses of revealed teeth. As I started this on-going series of works I almost wondered what I was painting. Initially I thought of leaves, but it was the happy beauty in the simplicity of the marks that brought the grin to my face and made the association with the eyelid, eye-brow and mouth.
