About The Artwork

49 Colour Squares: Blue Base is one of a series of three paintings each with a different colour base layer; red base (painting 1); blue base (painting 2) & yellow base (painting 3). Although the base layers are different the top layer which is transparent, is similar on all three paintings. I am interested in the alteration that a transparent colour can make to an opaque base colour, so I experimented. 49 Colour Squares: Blue Base, I took an opaque blue; I used Coeruleum blue, a mid-value blue with an intense brightness. I divided the canvas into seven horizontal strips. The central strip was pure Coeruleum blue tinted in three progressive stages towards white at the top of picture plane and shaded in progressive stages towards black at the bottom of picture plane. (I have included a colour sketch in the photographs to demonstrate this). I then painted seven transparent vertical strips of colour down the canvas, comprising of the three primaries red, yellow and blue; the three secondaries orange, green and purple and violet to complete the seven colours of the spectrum. In total creating 49 transparent & related colour squares (7x7). I found the outcome very interesting and I hope you do too. The paintings can be purchased as a set of 3. The purchase price for the set of 3 is negotiable. The paintings are generally 24 x 24ins however there is some slight discrepancy in the painting sizes.

Welcome to my Saatchi web page. My painting process is an intuitive activity and a continual process of exploration. My work is generally non representational and an attempt to articulate creative ideas and thoughts through an exploration of rhythms, sequences, patterns and cycles using colours, lines, shapes, textures and layers. I photograph all of my work in my workshop, which benefits from a transparent roof and a north light, making the photographed colours as accurate as is possible with a digital camera. I also try to photograph on cloudy days again for consistency and accuracy of colour. My work is collected both nationally and internationally; collectors include LVMH. My paintings are unique 'one offs' and I include a signed Certificate of Authenticity with each sale. I do not produce prints or deal in NFT's All work on this page has been created from 2020 onwards. I hope that you like it.
