Based on a sketch painted during Wilderness Festival 2017, the composition is inspired by 'Bathers at Asnières', Georges Seurat. Like other impressionists, Seurat painted people enjoying their leisure time, and everyone in 'Consequence of Empire' was originally sketched at the festival doing the same thing, but it seems current events have nudged their way into the scene. Brightly coloured to convey the festival mood, there are subtle references to the EU flag in the gold and blue combination of the figure in the foreground, and the yellow flowers that recall the tumbling stars. Depicted are a diverse range of people, many of whom are female, unlike the Seurat this piece is based on. There is a reference to Britannia in the seated figure wrapped in a Union Jack towel, behind her a soldier walks away on his modern artificial limbs past a kneeling figure lit up by the device in his hand. In the water a mother comforts her fearful daughter and above them women practice power poses on surfboards, while in the distance a blond male assesses his neighbour in the shower. The mood of the whole piece is light-hearted but still intended to provoke thought. Every one of the people shown was in attendance at the festival apart from the figure in the foreground, who is my eldest daughter.

Following on from her role as Roaming Sketch Artist for Wilderness Festival between 2014 and 2018, Hamley became the first official Artist in Residence for Jazz Live at the Crypt, an established jazz venue in South London and was recently selected as the Reserve Artist for the 2022 Sky Portrait Artist of the Year. Hamley's work has been selected for the ING Discerning Eye exhibition, the Lynn Painter-Stainer's Competition, the Dulwich Picture Gallery Open Exhibition and she is a Folio Society commissioned Illustrator. When working plein air Hamley uses medium that are easily transportable such as watercolour. The larger format paintings are executed in the studio with acrylics as they allow her to work quickly, add texture and create depth of colour with glazes and dry-brush techniques. Dali and Magritte made an impression on Hamley at an early age, also Rembrandt and Renoir, later Goya, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Turner, Duchamp, Magritte, Escher, Stanley Spencer, Hockney, Bacon and Frink, currently Bonnar, Seurat and Manet.
