About The Artwork

If one thing had to be singled out in order to describe the socio-economic situation in post-war Kosovo, then the generator would do it best. Due to the lack of electricity supply, the images and noise from the use of generators is deeply embedded in the memory of Kosovar society. I remember as a child, my father teaching me how to operate the generator: "A Little Beyond 220V", he would say, "otherwise it will burn the household appliances". Being in the dark as a result of power cuts used to be a daily challenge. Just when we thought that we overcame the electricity problem these last 3-4 years, the economic inflation as a result of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, is unfortunately pushing the society of Kosovo to return to the noisy alternative: the use of generators. "A Little Beyond 220V" is a composition with geometric shapes created to greet the past and the present – the future I do not know for how long - but I know that the wars are bringing darkness to Kosovo and to the world in general.

Hekuran Sokoli, (born April 17, 1989 in Prishtina), is an emerging artist currently focused on geometric art. At a young age, he started working at a printing press and this is where his desire for colors and arts in general grew. After graduating in 2012 from the Faculty of Arts - University of Pristina, he worked as a graphic designer and now works as a journalist at Klan Kosova television, where he covers events and writes articles about culture. During the total lockdown as a result of the pandemic, Sokoli started working on a group of artworks entitled "The Astral Journey" and thus opened his first solo exhibition in June 2021 in the lobby of the National Library of Kosovo. On July 18, 2022, his artwork “The Imperfect Balance” was selected by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for the enrichment of the public art fund in Kosovo. On July 15, 2023, he opened his second solo show "My Broken Pieces" at the "ODA Gallery" in Shkodër, Albania, where 24 geometric abstraction artworks as well as a self-portrait were exhibited. On November 8, 2023, he opened his third solo show at "Raiffeisen Gallery" in Prishtina, where 14 geometric abstraction artworks were exhibited. Artist's statement: In a world where the expectations concerning mankind are ever-increasing, I can do a few things to make a living. Yet I settle for what is most insecure and childish. This is because only in art I find the full expression. Only in art I can merge my knowledge and experience together with my imagination and create something unimpeded. In it I find shelter, intellect, creativity, joy, struggle, hard work, discipline, fun, individualism, challenge, healing, acceptance and above all, FREEDOM. I manifest all of this through geometric forms and shapes because this is my best way of expression. Through geometric art I manage to express the known and the unknown within myself.
