A Long Slow Set - Framed Sun Relief on Birch Plywood Painting

I have been carving and grinding wood reliefs for 25 years. These reliefs were inspired by traveling to and from Colorado. I am awestruck by nature. The colors, textures, patterns, substance and vastness of it all. We can never get enough, and we will always seek to recreate the feelings we encounter because of it. To me the Colorado wilderness has no end. It has only beginnings. I have run to it several times in my life, and now I keep running with it. It goes on and on. My adventures drive my art, move my soul, free my heart and quiet my mind. My travels are integral to my well-being. When I travel, I end up looking at the mountains, the plains, the sky, the clouds. It excites me so much that when I see something that moves me I want to recreate it or even more-so replicate the feeling it has given me. I created this piece in a second series from 2010. Both series are very different. Some of my work has actual mountains and landscapes that inspire me and some are purely from an imaginative point of view. And yet some are charged by a theme. It could be light, it could be depth of field, contrast. This piece specifically is related to the effect that we see when we look to the mountains and see different layers and tones of each mountain range. I have been captivated by it in the Berkshires of MA, the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA and all of the mountain ranges in Colorado. Temperature, weather, light, humidity, dust, pollen, smoke and even fall colors have effects on the depth and transitions that we see. When I witness this effect I am always in awe. I'm not even sure how to describe it but this parallax effect soothes my soul. I feel very grateful and I feel the limitlessness of the world and beyond. I also feel the endless possibilities of my own being.
