This is Aethelflaed being forced to flee the Viking invasion of the royal palace in Chippenham to the swamps of Somerset. This is a continuation of the painting titled: Aethelflaed returns the bones of St Oswald, which is also on this website. The pattern on Aethelflaed's sleeve is taken from an Anglo Saxon stone cross, the brooch is from the Sutton Hoo hoard.
