This painting is 3rd in my Energy Series. I've always been interested in abstraction, but within that abstraction parts of my real life emerge. This painting captures a moment I was walking along the banks of a river in Durham England, in the mist on the other side of the river towering above the trees I could see Durham Cathedral splendidly reflecting the light in the morning fog. The cathedral is 12th century in origin. It towers above everything as if floating, a Gothic monolith conjuring thoughts of goblins and dragons. But it was not the image I had in mind when I began this painting, the paint is put on with a knife enabling me to spread, scratch and sometimes flick the paint across the canvas. I felt like I was buttering something ancient. This is a large work and it gives off lots of energy. The canvas at the edges give an indication of process and the materials used, a layer of gesso onto which the paint is poured then worked into the picture.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS.
