About The Artwork

All of my abstract intuitive work starts as an automatic drawing on paper or more often on watercolour paper as well as on stretched canvas. The automatic drawing technique I do has been inspired by the Surrealist movement of the early 20th century. Recurring motifs such as the embryonic like spiral or circular form and an arcing wing shape in the automatic drawings lend to thoughts of life and ancestral entities. I then paint the motifs in vivid, harmonizing colours to bring out the motifs in the drawings. Often a black background serves as the void of nothingness or interstellar space, if you will. Initially, the black background was inspired by eastern European enamel work, but as the embryo motif became more prevalent and with the appearance of the wing shape, the work took on an existential meaning for me. I hope the viewer can ponder on the meaning of life via help from the titles. A Pinkish embryo is emerging from the shadows into the realm of possibility as a sunlit yellow ancestor is anticipating the event.

Holly Winters is primarily a painter of acrylics and oil on canvas, although she produces digital images as well. Her work is often a minimalist style, but she does paint in a representational style as well. "I paint in a minimalist style, yet I think it works in that the forms in the image are not overwhelmed, but rather allowed to breathe. The simple forms that evolve from the original spontaneous continuous-line drawings I use as templates for my paintings are symbolic, often recurring motifs that evoke meaning for me. They are forms from my unconscious mind which give rise to conscious ponderings on the preciousness of all life whether that be physical manifestations or immaterial ones as hinted at through my titles." She is also open to painting commissions.
