About The Artwork

NOTE: The painting will be sent with a 8x10 white mat as seen in the photo I've been exploring the ways in which fixed pigment creates feelings of motion and thought. This particular series I call Apophenia for the way humans imagine meaning where there is none. After all, a painting is just pigment on a flat surface, but it that is all we humans saw, painting would not have the power to move us as it does. Paintings that end up successfully embodying my aim happen in stages, the layers of painting separated by stretches of time away from the canvas or paper. The first layer involves laying down paint, either following a composition plan or color scheme until I reach a point where I am unsure what to do next. So I let them sit a while and only return when I have surrendered my plan and can see what the painting itself is suggestive of. The next layer or layers alter the previous in ways that turn them into something else entirely, which always disappoints me and fills me with regret at having "ruined" what I had seen in them previously. I have to take time away until I forget the regretted direction. When I return to the "ruined" painting, I often see beauty that I had missed in my sadness at the loss of what I’d become attached to in the previous iteration. I keep repeating the process until a painting strikes me after the pause as complete and full of the qualities I aim for. In this painting, there was a desperation in the overlay of the white that I thought at the time would be an intermediate layer. Instead, by the alchemical grace of the process, it carried both a energetic vibrance and a peaceful ease that was surprising and pleasant.

What gives me joy in the world is experiencing still moments in the process of unfolding, whether a hillside that kneads its earth in geologic time or an insect perched, its arrival and departing flight reverberating in the frozen moment. My small work tends toward the figurative and my larger works the abstract. In everything, I need to see the arc of change, not as a photo would capture a bird in flight but the way we experience the ephemeral now that is never really there by the time we notice it.
