About The Artwork

This painting was done during a scorching summer in Buenos Aires, where the heat seemed to melt not only the asphalt but also one's thoughts. As for why this particular woman came to mind, I can't say for sure. Perhaps it was a longing for something vibrant (I spent entire days at home under the air conditioner). But one evening, I decided to treat myself to some ice cream at a café. When the door swung open, a girl walked in who bore a striking resemblance to the portrait. I called out to her and showed her the painting. Later, she posted on social media: "I was strolling around Argentina when a woman approached me and claimed she had painted me the day before."

I am a Russian immigrant currently residing in Argentina. Until recently, my life had never leaned towards drawing or painting. However, I can't say I'm entirely unfamiliar with the visual arts, having spent a couple of years living in Madrid and studying photography. My venture into painting began unexpectedly in April 2022, during my time in Moscow. The chaos of the war with Ukraine, along with the prevailing tension and fear, left me feeling paralyzed. It was then that I found solace in painting. It became a refuge for me, offering moments free from fear where I could immerse myself in the act of blending paints. I find joy in the sensation of escaping reality. There's something magical about starting a drawing with just a vague idea and witnessing an independent character emerge on the canvas, completely detached from me. Now settled in Buenos Aires, I've brought along some of my paintings from Russia. Whenever I manage to carve out some time, I still indulge in painting. However, even here, my paintings often take on a dramatic tone. I'm not entirely sure why, and I prefer not to dwell on it.
