I created this polyptych work for my solo art project "The Way I See" awarded the Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant for the first time in 2013. The project was realised as a touring exhibition; first at the Sugar Store Gallery, Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal followed by the complete installation with the exhibition catalogue at the Japan House Gallery, Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London. Originally, I produced each work by arranging it in pairs to form the diptych portrait series for my project "The Way I See". I see fallen leaves on a macro level as indicating the "autumn" of civilization inspired by Dutch historian Johan Huizinga in his work "The Autumn of the Middle Ages" and at a micro level as a metaphor for the frailty of individual existence. They are also an amplification of the concept of "Memento Mori" (consider mortality), which is seen in Western art throughout history. This polyptych work comprises 12 canvases in line with the number used to indicate the basic unit of time to promote a more universal conversation. Hence, the title "Autumn of Silence". The work consists of twelve framed canvases. However, to form a folding screen style, four frames in a longitudinal row are fixed together securely, and each row is fastened together with piano hinges. (Please refer to the additional images.) The size indicated in the artwork profile is under the unfolded condition for installation. As mentioned above, the work employs a folding screen style with three parts and will be folded in three when shipping. The size of the folded framed polyptych work before crating is: 135 (H) x 65 (W) x 18 (D) cm Due to the weight (15 kg), providing a durable picture hanging system for installing the work is strongly recommended.

Hideyuki Sobue (b. 1965) lives and works in the Lake District, UK, yet grew up as an orphan in Aichi, Japan. Working with drawing and painting, two historic media that have served as a fundamental means of communication since prehistoric times, he explores the unbroken line in the relationship between art and humanity. Sobue uses an entirely original brush hatching technique employing Japanese sumi ink and acrylic. Created through a fusion of influences - the concept of Disegno in the Florentine school of the Renaissance, oriental artistic heritage and neurological studies - Sobue’s medium attempts to create a platform bridging east and west, and explore the interdisciplinary approach related to the human act of seeing. Sobue has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and Japan. Notable exhibitions include “A Letter to the Earth from Beatrix” commissioned by the National Trust and supported by Arts Council England
