About The Artwork

Statement “The emptiness of our societies is offset by excessive consumption of images.” Ortega y Gasset, in the text “The dehumanization of art”, warns of how the rectangular geometric architecture of cities leads to the progressive removal of the human figure from the life of abstract artists, forcing them to consume images through the television screen to find balance with their more human side. On the other hand, excessive consumption leads the viewer to perform a ritual of humanization, turning the mobile phone into a kind of “main object” close to transcendence. Or unconsciously, our societies ironically inflict on themselves a sustained self-healing in the theories of chromotherapy, using the screen and its beams of light to heal themselves. Moving chats and social networks into a resource and a desperate attempt to show us our emotions. My art is thus articulated through the appropriation and repetition of emojis that flood the communication made through whatapp, messenger, snapchat, among others. I painted the space between a retro comic book filled with patterns, signs and indexes, formerly belonging to the universe of Warhol and Roy Litchenstein, where the icons gained immortality and a virtual pop, which interacting with each other, recontextualize creating current and closer discourses to our social reality. I work on collective memory, visual communication and fictional virtual space by painting the non-real and the virtual, using the color of the spectrum with healing power. (chromotherapy). I am interested in the full/empty binom and the large/small, the silhouette and its relationship with absence and loss, capturing memories through a textured painting. In contrast to a fading and nuanced painting that announces the decay and collapse of pre-existing social models and norms. I painted thus the immortalization of the ephemeral and the poetry in painting. by Pedro Almeida, 2023

PEDRO ALMEIDA born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo It was in Lisbon, while attending pharmacy school, that he discovered his belated interest in the arts. And it was only while working as a pharmacist that he decided to attend a painting course as a hobby at AR:CO art school and came into contact with oil and acrylic painting for the first time. At the beginning of those classes, during a surfing session, he suffers a dislocation of the elbow that will change the course of his life. The immobilization of his shoulder and right hand, for a few weeks, forces him to keep those classes, which were already paid for, to change the brush to his left hand — he had been right-handed since he entered primary school, when the teacher forced him to write with his right hand. He has never stopped painting since. Thus, it is at ARTE Ilimitada, an alternative art school in Lisbon, that he first starts exposing is art. And, after this experience, he felt a growing desire to attend a course in fine arts, and subsequently, he got the Bachelor of Arts from the Fine Arts Faculty of Lisbon, followed by a Master's degree in painting under the guidance of full professor Isabel Sabino, PhD. After completing the Master's degree, he spread his wings and flew to the city of Madrid, where, in addition to holding exhibitions, he worked as an artistic director at the En_Loop Gallery. Has a curated he organized and produced several exhibitions between Portugal and Spain. But it is in painting that he maintains his daily practice, despite his interest in sculpture and installation, working in these fields when he produces site-specific works. Exhibits regularly since 2010. He currently lives in Barcelona
