I met this individual at the entrance of my viticulturist friend. The swallows took up residence there. They welcome visitors, brushing heads if they have not had time to walk away before their arrival! It’s amazing to see the young swallows ready to fly and clumping in the nest. To wonder if the latter will be able to support for a long time all this little world! Barn swallows nest in colonies in enclosed spaces such as garages, barns or under bridges. Its long forked tail distinguishes it from thecommon house martin. Its red mask is also very distinctive. Its long wings look like a bit those of the black swift, another migratory bird which is a little larger than the Hirundo rustica (the barn swallow, the other name of our model). Well found throughout the northern hemisphere for its nesting and the southern hemisphere for its wintering. Its world population is estimated at 190 million individuals. In France, it has decreased by 43% in 10 years according to a 2016 study by the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux and it is forbidden to destroy, mutilate, capture or remove it, intentionally disturb it or naturalise it; to destroy or remove eggs and nests. Finally, alive or dead, it is also forbidden to transport it, to hold it in a cage, to sell it or to buy it. But it is quite possible to admire it flying in the sky of our countryside.
