About The Artwork

"...even the words seem cruel and crass when you're tough and transparent as armored glass." -Elvis Costello The Bathers sequence is an ongoing inquiry into life before the fall….In it I'm generating fictions and ghosts through depiction of figures communing with water. The goal is to sensate that feeling of youth we have when we swim, float, wade or contemplate water. I will these characters to be spirited away in pools of the mercurial past. The investigation has lead to the evidence of the endless summer ending over and over again. The bathers are stand ins for the fugitive nature of time. They are the ghosts of youth congregated and pooling; on beaches and banks, rivers and streams of consciousness. Blurred stand-ins for the accelerated flow of time. Apparitions appearing as youth passing. They are about understanding passing or lost youth wading through time's itinerant stasis and perpetual flight thus acknowledging the binary pattern of thinking which is either ruminating about the past or anticipating the future rather than balancing on this slight moment that is the present. In presenting fleeting presence I seek the sensation of seeing combined with the sense of remembering, forgetting, longing, living, dying and going home thigh deep in the eternal waters of youth. Its the end of the world as they know it and they feel fine. Up to here in ontology she wades out to meet the moon... She's always been beside herself in the water (like the amphibian's daughter or a happy little otter) She died of old age 100 years ago this June but not on the day shown. No, that day she was young and carefree and going for a dip in the creek behind her cousin's cabin in a glossy mercurial memory of melted snow. These 2 are long gone but their ghosts haunt the shoreline and breach the 4th dimension and ford the the River Styx. Meta-girl is a bather within a bather. The subtext of a dream. Their gaze is on something we can't see. We look at them looking with the sun on our backs. Who observes us observing? Waterfalls stilled, waves retreating, time killed and late August repeating ad nauseum.
