About The Artwork

Until recently, the idea that evolution is predetermined was generally accepted and acknowledged. It is an old concept that appears in the time of Aristotle and was nuanced under the impulse of the Enlightment, namely Leibniz for whom the aim of evolution was no longer considered reachable, but could be its guiding line. The world could be understood as being constantly moving as well as being structured. This is what philosopher Gilles Deleuze describes as “le pli” (‘the fold’). The study of random motion as well as recent discoveries in quantum physics, seem to cast doubt on this concept of the finality of evolution. This is hardly intelligible for the non-experts that we are, but the actual climate crisis, particularly the highly erratic events and happenings, leads us to concretely understand the rising unpredictability of any evolution. Through a baroque inspired allegory of a fluid landscape in full mutation, Denis van Baren intends to represent the dilution, the spreading of elements in a rather complex and unpredictable world, a world that reinvents itself constantly and which holds no limits.

Denis van Baren is a French-Dutrch artist born in Paris on the 11th of September 1968. He first trained as an architect and specialized in the preservation and restoration the architectural heritage. He practiced this activity on the highest level in Brussels for two decades. Since 2011, he devotes himself exclusively to his painting. van Baren draws since his early childhood, and first developed his skills in the watercolour technique. This has a considerable influence on his actual acrylic paintings, especially in the balance between light and shade. His architectural training as well as important personal research contributes to a very original representation of space and his experience to conserve the artistic heritage also confers to his work a particular philosophical dimension where time and memory play a central role. Through different series, he approaches the theme of memory.
