About The Artwork

The sky and the sea are two recurring themes in Cinzia Sarcina's works due to their deep symbolic values, the call for freedom, mutability, and change of the status quo. In this painting, the two elements do not overlap each other; each has its own visual identity, and the horizon is clearly marked by a black line. The jute canvas itself provides a material support that is not smooth, not neutral, but deliberately participates in the physicality of the work. The sea, with its lively waves, takes shape with energetic horizontal brushstrokes of blue, light blue, black and white, crossed by vertical blue touches. The sky is geometrically constructed with square blocks of colour, “à la Cézanne”. The masses, the volumes, are made by the geometric precision of the interlocking colours of white, shades of blue and yellow. The white in the sky builds passing clouds; in the sea it is the foam of moving water. The perception is that of a solid, organic whole that is constantly changing, just as nature, life, is always changing. The painting reaches the apex of its movement with the rotating swirl of the fish, which, from the depths of the water, leap into the air, high above, breaking through the sky. Another geometry, that of the circle, rushes through water and air, connecting their flow. The wheel of the fish, growing more and more vigorous as they rise towards the sky, until they disappear, refers to the possibility of another place, in which everyone can find their own existential dimension. My love for art began the very moment my memories originated. Even as a child, I liked to express myself with drawing and colours. I spent hours and hours tinkering with coloured pencils, crayons and felt-tip pens. I did my first painting when I was still a young girl, at the age of sixteen: a naïfs-style painting depicting a country landscape with rural buildings, completely shrouded in snow. I loved to go to the library and browse through art history books and exhibition catalogues to learn about famous painters and their works. Then I took to frequenting museums and any place rich in paintings and statues, such as ancient noble palaces and churches, of which my country, Italy, is so generous. As I studied the styles of the different historical periods and the characteristics of individual artists, I searched for my own identity. Those were the years of adolescence, then of the search for my own personal stylistic signature. Work in the art world has marked my entire career: I have designed fittings and set designs for haute couture brands and later devoted myself to garment design. In the meantime, I got married and had my daughter Nicole. I love animals; my dog Perla is my inseparable companion. I started painting again some years ago, after my experience as a stylist ended and my daughter grew up. The creative impulse I have in me is irrepressible and has driven me to pick up my paintbrush and palette again. When I paint, the melting pot of thoughts, feelings, emotions that I have in my soul takes shape day after day, idea after idea, brushstroke after brushstroke. All the immaterial inside me comes out and becomes material in the finished work: it is like magic.
