A Sonnet between Two Seas (by Swinburne) Between two seas the sea-bird’s wing makes halt, Wind-weary; while with lifting head he waits For what may come of glory through the gates That open still toward sunrise on the vault High-domed of morning, and in flight’s default With spreading sense of flight anticipates What new sea now may lure beyond the straits, His wings exulting that her winds exalt And fill them full as sails to seaward spread, Fulfilled with fair speed’s promise. Pass, my song, Forth to the haven of thy desire and dread, The presence of our lord, long loved and long Far off above beholden, who to thee Was as light kindling all a windy sea. The ocean has always played a great role I my life. It sometimes feels to me like the ocean is matching her emotions to mine. This peaceful early morning scene feels to me like waking up in the morning after a night of restless sleep and nightmares. Awaking to a new morning with embers of hope, joy and peace starting to kindle with the sunrise light. I used oil paint in a more impesto style that usual on this canvas. This piece is stretched (on a timber frame) without a decorative frame and will need the necessary hanging hardware (hooks etc) to be implemented into the stretched canvas. I generally ship in a rolled up format (without the timber frame) to keep the shipping costs down, however if you prefer I can offer a quote for shipping in a crate.

Nature has always played a great role in my life. While growing up in very close proximity to the ocean my parents instilled in us a great reverence for the beauty and majesty of the natural world that surrounds us. My dad gave me my first camera at age six, just before the start on our four year long journey. While circumnavigating the world on our 29ft sailing yacht he showed me how to look for those brief moments when sunlight is slightly filtered and yields soft, luminous tones on subject matter. My mom continued an accurate and well-illustrated journal and from her I learnt a deep love of drawing, colour and form. I began to see the world in paint. As a small girl before even knowing the term complimentary colours, I would sit in the rocking boat and pair up and marry my green and red pastels. I would makeup long winded imaginary tales of the red princess who would marry the green knight. After completing a degree in photography and working in numerous fields, I realised that my heart was yearning to pick up a brush and dip it in some paint once again. So in 2022 I took the plunge and resumed the magical journey that I left more than 20 years ago in high school in Paarl.
