VIEW IN MY ROOM
India
Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 48 W x 48 H x 2 D in
Ships in a Crate
As someone who takes an auto everywhere I go, this view from the back seat is something that has been ingrained in my brain. With Chennai's heat, pollution, traffic, and noise, these rides have become something that I started to associate with negativity and chaos. I wanted to juxtapose that chaos with something that is calming: plants. Because of the intense texture and color in the piece, you will see that your eyes shoot across the canvas you attempt to find an area of peace. However you will fail to find it. This tension mimics what it feels like to travel in an auto with all these different elements coming at you. There are hidden details of a women with her child, a temple and two motor-bikers in the background. The piece contains multiple layers of textures created with air dry clay and found objects such as dead plant matter, branches, discarded plastic, empty medicine sheets, stitched on cloth and paper. Despite the delicacy of a few of the materials, I have ensured that it is encased with multiple protective layers of paint and varnish to ensure no damage can occur. This piece took me one month from conceptualising to completion and comes with hanging hardware.
