My brother enlisted into the Marines at the age of 17. I remember telling him when he was leaving "its about the discipline and never about your feelings" and if he can remember that his 4 years will fly by. I painted this When I started my multi series body of work called Black Identity Enthusiast, a work that investigates the Black Panther Party 10 point program and creates comparison to current day narratives. This particular pieces is part of a series called "If all Black Men Were Pacifist" I was deeply inspired by Emory Douglas work and Huey P Newton Dissertation. After watching the 13th Documentary by Ava DuVernay I felt compelled to revisit the narratives that the Black Panther Party advocated for and make connection to current day narratives. My brother told me recently that his only way out of the ghetto was to serve this country, I immediately became sadden because I knew this wasn't true, especially for a country who doesn't value the black body. I decided to paint on an American Flag because this was my way of protesting his enlistment and to generate conversations of Black men and serving for the Military. The biggest disrespect to the American flag would be to paint, burn, rip it I decided to paint a portrait and a call to action. This unfinished piece will be sold and finished after his enlistment.
