About The Artwork
Rendered with oil pains and palette knives on a masonite panel, this piece is the first in a pair of two monochrome works meant to evoke the spinal structure of elasmobranchs, such as sharks and rays. I began with sketching the spine, and piled on layers of abstraction from there. The stark contrast between the black and white embody rapid movement and tidal changes, evocative not only of the shark but its ever-changing environment as well.
