About The Artwork

A painting of the late great British actor Peter Postlethwaite, in his last stage role, as King Lear, at the Young Vic theare, London. I followed Peter's career from his early days at the Everyman Theatre, in Liverpool and I was lucky enough to meet him a few times. He was a marvellous actor with many stand out performances, on stage and screen. This painting began as an abstract interpretation of the storm in King Lear, but having experienced Peter's performance, I knew that I had to put him in the image. I have always loved theatre and this painting gave me the opportunity to recreate the drama of one of the most powerful and moving scenes in Shakespeare's cannon, featuring one of my favourite actors..

I am a freelance artist and curator. I was born in Liverpool, UK and grew up during a wonderful flowering of the local, national and international art scene. As an international port, my home town was always outward looking and there was music and art everywhere. I currently live in Gloucester, in the beautiful South west of England and I teach painting on cruise ships, which takes me all over the world. At home, I paint in a wooden building at the bottom of the garden. My work is inspired by my experiences and the things I love. I paint flowers and landscapes in a romantic style, which is expressive and informed by drawings photographs and memory. I see myself in the English tradition of Turner, Piper, Sutherland and Bomberg, a tradition which freely interprets the landscape and still life in a semi-abstract manner. I work in oil, watercolour, charcoal and mixed media.
