A diferencia de lo que comúnmente se cree, los dos tipos de arte raramente son hechos por la misma persona. Aquel artista dedicado a hacer figuras, que conoceremos como el artista vidriero, no se dedica a hacer vitrales. Incluso las dos artes no se practican en el mismo lugar geográfico. Es como la diferencia que existe entre el pintor de caballete y el muralista. 
 Así pues, los vitrales tienen por fuerza una estructura dividida. El haber convertido esta necesidad en un elemento artístico por sí mismo es lo que da su grandeza a las catedrales góticas. Al utilizar estas armaduras para delinear las principales subdivisiones ornamentales, los pintores de vidrio son capaces de fundir una imagen completa y una arquitectura, en una de las más completas unidades artísticas
