My approach to painting is generally very intuitive. The painting tells me where "it wants to go".
I started „Blue Onions“ with a dark warm brown colour and my favourite markmaking with coloured chalk and wax pastel on top of it.
Then layer by layer I worked with mainly golden and a few other acrylic colours on top, intuitively leaving parts of the scribblings visible. When I work with many layers my aim is to create a unique combination of textures and forms on top of each other which leads to a richness of expression.
Later in the process of painting „Blue Onions“ I came across some elements that reminded me of „hay“ (dried grass) so I followed this spontaneously and finally decided to create a stream of hay going through the kind of „universe“ which seemed to me had shown up on the canvas until then. The stream of hay symbolizes nature, which is one of the most important and beautiful elements of our human existence.

At the end of the painting process I added a „feminin“ (the romantic pattern on the form of a lying vase on the top left, with more round movements and shapes) and a „masculin“ element (the four vertical golden stripes along the right side) for balancing the whole composition in this „universe“. The title „Blue Onions“ arose very spontaneously when I looked at the finished painting.

These two onions again developed intuitively during the painting process without consciously choosing the shape of an onion. My experience is that shapes and elements of life are always turning up in my paintings through the pure intuitive movement of spatula (which I used preferably in painting „Blue Onions“), paintbrush or other tools on the canvas. I like to use them as abstract as they arise to „pick up“ the beholder's own ideas and stories about the painting.
I have been inspired by Klimt in many of my paintings.

Blue Onions is protected by a coating of satin varnish.

Size: H200 cm x W120 cm x D2,4 cm (H78,74 inch x W47,24 inch x D0,94 inch)

Blue Onions was painted on stretched canvas but will be shipped UNSTRETCHED and safely rolled in a tube.
Any professional frame shop will stretch it for you.

It can look very different, depending on the light in the room or the light you put on it. You will be amazed, how many possibilities you have to present this painting. The gold is an important element and together with the dark brown it always gives the room a warm, precious atmosphere.

Bettina Charlotte's career as an artist began after a long life of exploration. Although she has traveled around geographically too, Berlin/ Germany had been her base for 54 years - in 2013 this has changed as she decided to move to the Portuguese island of Madeira. Before starting her artistic career Bettina Charlotte has explored different professions: she travelled the world as flight attendant for Lufthansa, she learned to be and worked as professional photographer, studied adult education and worked with adults for many years, was self employed and worked as systemic life coach in Berlin, Germany – these professions have given her a wide horizon of different elements of life. Because of her constant drive to be creative, art has always accompanied her during times of other professions and in 2013 she finally decided to work as full time artist when she moved to the island of Madeira to be part of the local artist community. Perhaps because of all this together--getting to know so many earthly professions--her art has turned more into the abstract and sometimes metaphysical. Her special ability is intuitive painting in a gestural expressive way – she calls it “The Art to Listen to Your Heart” which she also teaches in workshops in Alentejo, on the Portuguese mainland. Bettina Charlotte spontaneously chooses the materials, tools and techniques - having fun and trusting her intuition to lead the way during the creative process is a very important factor for an authentic expression, she says. In early years she was inspired by Miro, Klimt, Klee, Picasso in painting and Rodin in sculpting. She lives and works in Portugal since 2013.
