Often before I begin a painting, an image will appear in my mind's eye sometimes accompanied by a title. At first, I won't usually know what it means, but these so-called 'visions' are compelling enough that I will start a painting. In this process of responding to what I see in my mind's eye, I will often discover something completely new along the way.

To me, watching the unexpected emerge is one of the most beautiful aspects of painting. By working quickly and spontaneously I am able to uncover previously inaccessible avenues in my work. The artist has to be open to this experience, and allow the process to take over.

About The Artwork

Usually my paintings start with an idea, most often in the form of color or composition. As I keep working though, I will sometimes discover something completely new along the way. I created this work after taking a week off from my art practice. Working with oils, I started this painting with a deep blue ground, and the rest just flowed naturally. By giving myself space from my work and taking a little time off to recuperate it enabled me to come to this work less stressed and with a fresh set of eyes. My work is always open to interpretation by the viewer, but to me the end result emanates joy and the spirit of playfulness. In my opinion, one of the greatest things about abstract painting is stepping into a playful creative state. By allowing yourself that freedom you can start to see the unexpected emerge which is truly magical.
