This painting is part of a new series of paintings to highlight my ijaw / African culture of how the female head dress/hair covering popularly called "gele" play a significant role during traditional marriage ceremonies aside being a compulsory part of the brides costume. In preparation for the marriage there's always a frenzy to get the right colour, the right design to fit the overall dressing of the bride. Hours before the occasion, the bride is usually helped by family members or close friends in knotting the headdress or gele. In the middle of the marriage negotiations, the gele is also used as a playful deceptive covering on the brides sisters to check if the bridegroom can recognize his wife - to - be without seeing her face. In this light, I have tried to piece together a body of paintings focusing on the bride, her richly gold coloured gele, her anticipation, her excitement, her mixed feelings etc. Two colours remain a constant in this body of works, purple and yellow.

Timi Kakandar uses painting, drawing and collage to explore his fascination with the human form in relationship to the challenges, joy, and social political issues that emanate from living and working within the African space. His recent work exudes a profound intensity of bright raw colours and gestural lines that infuse a presence which powerfully engage the viewer. He reveals an ability in the composition of human forms with dramatic colours reminiscent of Fauvism.
