About The Artwork

Bucephalus. The most famous horse of Alexander the Great in world history. The author of this painting was inspired when creating this work by the fate of the legendary horse and its owner. According to ancient authors, Bucephalus descended from a barbarian stallion and a Thessalian mare. It was an animal of high stature, golden-red color. Alexander's father Philip II acquired it in 343 BC. e., during the Olympic Games in Dion, for 13 talents (this is approximately 340 kilograms of silver). The horse turned out to have a wild disposition, and did not let anyone near him. Alexander, who was then only 12 years old, guessed that Bucephalus was simply afraid of shadows, turned the horse's face to the sun and jumped on its back. From that day on, they became inseparable. For more than 20 years, the faithful Bucephalus carried the hero across the vast expanses of Asia. And after the death of the horse, Alexander founded the city and named it after his fighting friend. It is the only city in the world named after a horse (modern Jalalpur in Pakistan). It was also said that once Alexander looked at his portrait in Ephesus, painted by the famous artist Apelles, and was dissatisfied with the work. Then, by chance, Bucephalus was brought to the portrait, who, with his neighing, greeted the owner depicted in the picture, as if alive. Apelles sarcastically exclaimed: "Vladyka, the horse turned out to be a better connoisseur of art than you!"... The painting is made in a classical style on a black background, which emphasizes the beauty and strength of the majestic horse Bucifal.
