FavoritesPainting: Oil on Canvas.
For years landscapes, whether it is a waterway, a meadow or a grove of trees, elements of a landscape have caught my attention. Sometimes it is a contrast of light, or a collection of color or an abstract arrangement of shapes. These moments are opportunities to understand how a painting can be a connection to translate those elements to a canvas.
It is through a constant back and forth of adding brushwork, scraping, correcting and redefining an area of a painting that the connection to the landscape becomes more direct. Compositions are planned out meticulously but the color and brushwork remain loose. Finding that edge between control and improvisation keeps the energy in the painting, especially with floral paintings. Reality can draw out an emotional response when something as intimate as a flower is painted on a large canvas, color and light become more visible.
