My subject is an old, upright chair found outside a forsaken barracks, at the decommissioned United States Air Force Base, Wendover, Utah. Open to the public, the Base is a fine source for realist painters and photographers. I am attracted to weathered surfaces. Strong, rusty reds, toasty browns and callous greens appear after deterioration and corrosion. Wandering the abandoned Base, dilapidated barracks and worn buildings, I found this chair, open under the scorching sun. The desert quickly changes metal and wood, erodes surfaces to sometimes-vibrant facades. The singularity of the chair caught my attention; I wondered where it was kept and who ruined its seat. Trifling and perhaps insignificant, the chair was a story.
